"I like to give back as a triathlon coach for the Fleet Feet Tri Training programs. I'm honored to play a small part in helping others on their journey into triathlon. It's such a rewarding and exciting sport to be a part of and Huntsville has a great triathlon community. I also try to volunteer at races throughout the season as well." - Tonya
Short Term Goals
Speed is my word of the year! I'm increasing my high intensity interval training on foot, bike and water to improve my Sprint and Olympic distances this year.
Long Term Goals
Maintain an active lifestyle, have fun and hang with some great tri peeps!
Essentials in my diet?
I found myself searching for a way to get back into shape after my first child. After seeing an interview with a celebrity mom who successfully completed a triathlon, I signed up for Tri 101 in 2010. I was instantly in love with the sport! There were so many positives that first season: getting out of my comfort zone, challenging myself mentally and physically, as well as carving out time for myself. Friendships sealed the deal, I was hooked.
After my second child, I participated in Tri 201 and completed my first Olympic distance in 2012. And last year I secretly went for the Half-Iron distance, only telling a few friends a week before. I was so scared of failure, but I reached my goal. While I still have that fear of failure, triathlon has taught me there is so much more to it than winning or crossing the finish line. It's the journey, the love and hate of it at times, the inner strength that is built from failing and trying again, the support of a great tri family and much more.
Last year I was also asked to join the team of coaches for Tri 201 and really felt like I was where I was meant to be. I love coaching and encouraging others to push beyond their belief in order to reach their triathlon goals. At any race, I'll be the crazy lady yelling "Yes you can!" and "Get what you came for!" to our participants. It just doesn't get any better than seeing the faces of excitement as they cross the finish line!
